NASA's release confirmed the walk was planned for component replacement and general station upkeep.

The ISS has been continuously occupied for more than two decades. Its exterior is a working structure that requires regular human intervention to stay functional. Every spacewalk that completes its maintenance objectives is a small argument for keeping humans in the loop on orbital infrastructure, at a time when the future of the ISS post-2030 is actively being debated. Meir and Adenot spending 6.5 hours ensuring the station keeps running is a concrete contribution to that debate, whether or not anyone frames it that way.

The Pairing That Makes This Walk Specific

What I keep returning to is the particular combination of Meir and Adenot. Meir is American, a NASA veteran who has been part of this story since its first chapter. Adenot is French, ESA-selected, newer to orbital missions. They planned, communicated, and executed a complex extravehicular task together, coordinating across two agencies whose training systems, bureaucratic cultures, and operational languages are not identical.

That kind of cross-agency fluency does not happen automatically. It requires translation, literally and procedurally, of the sort that tends to be invisible when it goes well. The fact that it went well is the data point. The ISS has always been an argument that rival space programs can share an airlock. Meir and Adenot are that argument's latest iteration.

Six is a strange number. Not small enough to be a scandal, not large enough to be a norm. If the conditions that produced this walk, a specific crew rotation, matching suit sizes, aligned task requirements, keep being the mechanism that produces all-female walks, then number seven will arrive the same way number six did: as a pleasant accident dressed up as a milestone.

I would like to be wrong about that. The case for being wrong is Sophie Adenot: she came through a pipeline that has more women in it than the pipeline that produced the 2019 crew. If that trend continues, the accidental architecture eventually becomes structural. The question is whether anyone is counting the pipeline, not just the walks.
