Epic Games Store Is Coming to Linux — With Caveats

Compatibility layers improved. Valve bet seriously on Proton and the Steam Deck, which brought a meaningful hardware install base to a platform that previously existed mostly in enthusiast forums and the hearts of people who got very upset when you called it "Unix." That installed base is now the real story underneath Epic's announcement — because the Steam Deck made Linux gamers into a market segment worth acknowledging out loud.
Valve's wager was essentially this: build the hardware, improve the compatibility layer, and watch third parties follow. Epic's announcement is evidence that the bet is paying off, at least at the level of launcher support. TechRadar notes that Nvidia's GeForce Now app for Linux has also emerged from beta around the same time, which suggests Epic isn't arriving at this decision in a vacuum — they're arriving alongside other platform infrastructure players who've read the same usage data.
This is also, in a narrow sense, a détente. Tim Sweeney has not historically been subtle about his feelings toward Valve's market position, and Valve has not been subtle about building the Steam Deck in a way that makes its own ecosystem stronger. But native Epic Games Store support on the Steam Deck doesn't actually hurt Valve — it makes the Steam Deck more useful as a device, which helps Valve sell hardware. Both sides get something. The gaming press frames this as Epic being generous to Linux users, which it is, but it's also Epic finding a way onto the Steam Deck without needing Valve's cooperation on software terms.
The thing the announcement doesn't say
The PC Enthusiast is direct about the gap in the announcement: there's no release date, and Fortnite support on Linux remains unconfirmed.
That second item is the one that actually matters, and not only because Fortnite has the player base that would move the needle on Linux adoption. Fortnite runs Easy Anti-Cheat, and Easy Anti-Cheat on Linux has a history that is, to put it generously, complicated. Epic has supported EAC on Linux in some configurations, but anti-cheat and kernel-level security tools are precisely the category of software that makes Linux compatibility genuinely difficult rather than just inconvenient. Getting the store working natively is an engineering problem with a clear solution path. Getting Fortnite working natively — with anti-cheat intact, with competitive integrity maintained, without opening new surface area for exploits — is a different category of problem.
A launcher without Fortnite is like getting the Blockbuster card but finding out the new releases are region-locked. The catalog is still useful. It's just not the catalog that moves people.
Peter Molyneux didn't invent the phenomenon of promising a feature and quietly not shipping the specific part that would have made it transformative — he just perfected it. I'm not calling Epic the Peter Molyneux of Linux gaming. I'm noting that "we're building a native Linux store" and "Fortnite works natively on Linux" are two different announcements, and only one of them has been made.
What the pattern says
Platform expansions follow a recognizable arc, and I've watched enough of them to have an uncharitable view of the timeline. The announcement lands. Warm reception. Two slips of the "soon" estimate. A partial launch — the launcher works, several games in the catalog install fine, one major title has issues. Eighteen months after the original AMA, the store is quietly functional for most use cases, and the discourse has already moved on to whatever the next thing is.
That's my bet. Not because Epic is incompetent — they're not — but because that's what platform expansions look like when you're doing them properly and without a gun to your head. There's no crisis forcing a hard ship date here. Linux gamers are a growing but still bounded audience. The work will get done on the timeline that the engineering team can actually sustain.
The Fortnite question probably resolves the same way: eventually, partially, with a caveat about certain anti-cheat modes. It won't be the clean unlock people are hoping for. It'll be "Fortnite works on Linux in Battle Royale mode with these specific settings," and that'll be the headline for about two days before people go back to arguing about GPU drivers.
