There is a philosophical puzzle called the Ship of Theseus that goes like this: if you replace every plank, sail, and rudder of a ship over time, is it still the same ship? Most people say yes, instinctively, because the story of the ship persists even when none of its original material does. Gregory Berns, a neuroscientist and professor of psychology at Emory University, thinks the human self works the same way — and that recognizing this should change how we think about who we are.

Berns laid out this argument in a recent conversation on Vox's The Gray Area podcast with host Sean Illing, drawing on his book The Self Delusion: The New Neuroscience of How We Invent and Reinvent Our Identities. His central claim is not particularly gentle: the unified, persistent self you experience as you is, in his framing, an illusion. What we actually are, he argues, is a sequence of related but distinct selves across time, held together by a narrative we continuously author and revise.

It's a position with real philosophical pedigree — Hume said something similar about bundles of perceptions, and Buddhist traditions have been making the point for millennia — but Berns grounds it in neuroscience rather than metaphysics.

The Body That Isn't Quite Yours

His first argument is physical. The body, Berns points out, is not a static container for a stable self. According to reporting by Space Daily on isotopic turnover research, nearly every atom in your body is swapped out over the years, meaning you are not, in any strict material sense, made of the same stuff you were a decade ago. Berns made precisely this observation in the interview, recalling that he noticed it as a teenager staring at a freckle on his arm, wondering how he could be the same person if the very molecules constituting that freckle were in constant exchange with the environment.

The Ship of Theseus, he notes, is built from inert material. It changes only through decomposition. A living human body changes constantly, and at a rate that makes the analogy almost insufficient. "The problem is orders of magnitude worse," he told Illing.

If the physical substrate is in flux, what provides continuity? Berns's answer: the story. "The storytelling is the thing that distinguishes us as human beings from every other animal on this planet," he said. His dog, he pointed out with some dry affection, has not yet woken him up to discuss her fear of death. Only humans construct narrative selves that span past and future — and it is that narrative capacity that creates both the experience of selfhood and its peculiar anxieties.

Memory, Confabulation, and the Stories We Fill In

One of the more unsettling implications Berns develops concerns memory. Childhood recollections, he argues, are something like playing a VHS recording back in 4K: you cannot generate resolution that wasn't captured in the first place. The brain fills the gaps — what neurologists call confabulation — and it does not fill them randomly. It draws on the narrative templates most available to it. If you've spent a lifetime consuming hero myths, your brain is likely to cast you as the protagonist in its reconstruction of your past. If your diet runs toward tragedy, the lacunae get filled accordingly.

"You are what you eat," Berns said — meaning, in this context, the stories you consume become the scaffolding for the story you tell about yourself.

This connects to something more clinically significant: the way self-narratives interact with mental health. Berns agreed with Illing's observation that labeling oneself as "an anxious person" is not merely descriptive but generative — it creates a perceptual filter through which ambiguous bodily sensations (a fluttering in the chest, a racing heart) get interpreted as confirmation of the label. The narrative, in other words, shapes perception in real time, not just in retrospect. That is not a trivial claim. It suggests that the stories we tell about ourselves have downstream effects on physiology and behavior that are more than metaphorical.

Psychedelics and the Snow Globe

The conversation turned, inevitably, to psychedelics — the therapeutic application that has attracted so much research attention in recent years. Berns's framing here is worth attending to carefully, because it differs from the popular "hallucination" account. Psychedelics, he argues, do not generate false perceptions; they alter perception itself. Since his entire theory of selfhood is grounded in self-perception, he sees psychedelics as a bottom-up tool for narrative revision, distinct from the top-down work of psychotherapy or deliberate reflection.

The neuroscientific context for this involves the default mode network — a set of brain regions associated with self-referential thought, autobiographical memory, and the construction of the continuous self-narrative Berns describes. According to the Psychedelic Science Institute, research has suggested that psychedelics suppress activity in the default mode network while simultaneously increasing connectivity between brain regions that do not typically communicate — a pattern consistent with the "shaking up the snow globe" effect Berns describes. The working hypothesis is that disrupting the default mode network temporarily loosens the grip of habitual self-narratives, potentially creating an opening for new ones.

Berns finds this promising. "It's kind of disconnecting or uncoupling your instantaneous perceptions from your past expectations of what you think you're perceiving," he explained. Whether that uncoupling reliably produces better narratives rather than simply different ones is an open question the research is still working through, and Berns doesn't overclaim it.

The Hard Problem, Briefly Visited and Wisely Abandoned

Illing pushed the conversation toward the hard problem of consciousness — the question of why there is subjective experience at all, why it is like something to be you. This is where Berns made a move that I find both intellectually honest and strategically sensible: he declined to solve it.

His argument is that resolving the hard problem is not necessary for making progress on the self. If the self is a story, you can work on telling a better story without first explaining what, exactly, is doing the telling. "If you accept the fact that the self is a story that you tell," he said, "you don't have to understand how that process happens. Just tell a better story."

He also offered a computational reason to doubt the hard problem will ever yield to direct inquiry: no computer can run a fully faithful simulation of itself, because such a simulation would require more memory than the original system contains. The self-model we carry is therefore necessarily a compression — "a cartoon version of ourselves," in his phrase. There may be several competing cartoons, each activated in different social contexts, and Berns thinks neuroscience is getting closer to understanding how we select among them.

Identity's Social Scaffolding

One tension the conversation surfaces without fully resolving is the degree to which self-narrative revision is actually within individual control. Berns argues that since everything in your head came from either direct experience or absorbed external input, you have more authorial control than you might think — curate what you consume, shape what you absorb.

Illing pushed back, noting that the social environment does a great deal of the shaping unrequested: the people who knew you before, who remember the version of you that you're trying to move past, actively reinforce older narratives simply by relating to you as if those narratives are still operative. Berns acknowledged this without dismissing it. "It does start with just saying it and believing it," he said, of the effort to claim a revised self-story. Not a small ask, but perhaps the only available first step.

There is something both liberating and vertiginous in Berns's framework. If the self is genuinely malleable, contingent, and narratively constructed rather than fixed, the possibilities for change are real. So is the instability. The conversation between Berns and Illing repeatedly hit that edge — the "icky feeling," as Berns called it, that arises when thinking turns back on itself too hard — and backed away. That might be an evolutionary self-protective reflex, as Berns suggests. Or it might just be what happens when you get close enough to the question to feel how little ground there is beneath it.

The question Berns leaves open, practically speaking, is what a "better story" actually requires. Knowing the self is constructed is the easy part. The harder work is the revision itself — and whether the tools he gestures toward, from psychedelics to targeted introspection, can reliably deliver that remains, for now, a genuinely open research question.
