The M5 Max: Overkill for Most, But in a Good Way
The M5 Max starts at $2,499 with 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage. You can configure it up to 128GB of RAM. It packs an 18-core CPU, a 40-core GPU, and 614GB/s of memory bandwidth. The Verge confirms that Apple is pitching these machines hard at local AI workloads — and that framing actually tells you something real about who's buying.
Fernando from 9to5Mac put it plainly in his breakdown of the new Mac Studio: compared to the M4 Max, the M5 Max gets you up to 3.9x faster LLM processing, 3.5x faster text-to-image generation, and 3x faster Magic Mask in DaVinci Resolve. Those numbers came out of nowhere for a single-generation jump — we're used to 20-40% gains, not nearly 4x.
Here's my honest take on that: if you're running Final Cut, Premiere, Lightroom, or Photoshop for a living, the M5 Max at baseline is probably more machine than you need. The M5 Ultra: Apple Flexing at $5,499

That's not cynical — it's actually the right way to think about it. Apple is showing what's possible at the high end, partly because that shapes what trickles down into everything else in a few years.
Who actually needs an M5 Ultra right now? According to Fernando's breakdown, we're talking large local AI model inference, 3D rendering, VFX pipelines, scientific computing, machine learning work, and massive multi-camera video productions. If you're replacing a high-end workstation PC, this is the comparison. If you're a solo creator deciding between a Mac Studio and a Mac mini, this is not the comparison.
The $5,499 starting price is $200 more than the previous M3 Ultra's launch price, per Fernando's video. That's not a big jump for what you're getting on paper. But once you start speccing up storage and memory, the price climbs fast — and you can push it all the way to an 8TB internal SSD if that's your life.
The M6 Mac Mini Sitting There Making Everything Complicated
Here's the thing nobody really wants to say directly: Apple is now selling an M6 Mac mini and an M5 Mac Studio at the same time, and the generation numbers are backwards from what you'd expect. The Mac mini is one full generation newer than the Mac Studio, and it costs dramatically less. That's going to confuse a lot of people who haven't been deep in the Apple Silicon weeds.

The chiplet architecture shift that defines the M5 Pro and Max makes this comparison even more nuanced than the marketing suggests.
If you're trying to choose between a Mac mini and a Mac Studio, the real question isn't which generation chip you're getting — it's whether your work ever actually hits the ceiling on a Mac mini. For most people? It won't. For the workflows listed above? The ceiling is very real, and the Mac Studio exists specifically to raise it.
So What Would I Actually Do?
I cover consumer tech, and I think about these buying decisions constantly. Here's where I land:
If someone handed me $2,500 right now, I would have a genuinely hard time not buying the M5 Max Mac Studio. Not because I need it — I almost certainly don't — but because the AI performance jump is real and that workload is only going to grow. The local AI benchmark numbers on the M5 Max have been turning heads for a reason. That's not marketing noise.
But if I'm being completely honest, an M6 Mac mini would probably handle 95% of what I do day to day and cost me half as much. The Mac Studio is the move if you're already pushing your current machine hard and feeling it — if renders are taking too long, if your LLM inference is choking, if you're managing truly massive projects. If you're not hitting those walls yet, the Mac mini is a better spend.
The M5 Ultra? That's not a "should I buy this" question for most people. If you have to ask, you don't need it. The people who need it already know exactly why they need it, and $5,499 is genuinely a bargain compared to what a workstation PC with comparable throughput would cost them.
The harder question — the one Apple hasn't fully answered — is what happens when M6 Max and M6 Ultra land. Because if the base M6 is already this capable, the Max and Ultra versions are going to be something else. Buying a Mac Studio right now is buying into the peak of one generation knowing the next is already on the way. Whether that bothers you probably says more about your workflows than anything else.
