Gears of War: E-Day Splits a Cross-Platform Squad
E-Day launches on Xbox and PC, leaving PS5 off the squad list. Reloaded welcomed that player last year. What changed for friends planning to play together?

Gears of War: E-Day is set to launch October 6 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with no PlayStation 5 version listed. Picture a Gears of War: Reloaded group with one player on PS5 and another on Xbox. Last time, they could squad up. This time, the PS5 player needs a supported device, or the group needs another game.
PC players can buy E-Day through the Microsoft Store or Steam. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass access is scheduled for the full launch. Calling this an Xbox exclusive describes a console boundary: the PC friend has a way in, while the friend whose only gaming machine is a PS5 has no announced E-Day edition to open.
Premium Edition buyers began playing early on October 1, IGN reported. Everyone else planning for the October 6 launch has a more basic question than where to take cover: who's actually able to join?
The Invite that Worked Last Time
In May 2025, Xbox announced Gears of War: Reloaded for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PS5 and Steam. The remaster launched that August with cross-play across its platforms. Xbox said players could play together without a Microsoft account; signing in enabled cross-platform friend invites and cross-progression. Xbox even used an Xbox-to-PlayStation invite as an example. An Xbox and PS5 pair had a supported route through the original campaign together, with Versus available afterward.
That PS5 friend didn't have to ask everyone to switch games or wait while the rest of the squad played. They could accept an invite on the console they owned. Reloaded made a promise through its platform list and its cross-play features, and the group could plan around it.
E-Day has its own squad options. Xbox lists two-player split-screen campaign co-op on console and online campaign co-op for up to four players. Xbox Play Anywhere offers shared progression and achievements across Xbox Series X|S and PC. Someone who uses both of those devices gets useful flexibility. The product page doesn't spell out E-Day's online cross-play arrangements, so Play Anywhere alone shouldn't settle whether friends on Xbox and PC can join the same session. For the PS5-only friend, the hurdle comes earlier: there's no announced PS5 game to install.
The group can keep playing Reloaded. To move everyone into E-Day, the PS5-only member needs access to a supported device. Otherwise, the Xbox and PC players can start without them, hold off, or choose something the whole group owns. None is a choice a platform announcement makes for friends. It just puts that conversation ahead of the first co-op session.
These releases also serve different places in the series. Reloaded remasters the original Gears of War, first released in 2006. E-Day is a new origin story set fourteen years before it, following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust invasion begins. A publisher could see a remaster on more consoles as a way to bring in players and a new entry as a draw for its own console. That reading fits the different releases, but Xbox hasn't given it as the reason for these two platform lists.
The Coalition's creative director Matt Searcy spoke proudly about E-Day's Xbox role. In an interview with creator Destin Lergarie, quoted by IGN via MP1st, he said the team was “proud to be one of Xbox’s main titles.” He also described the team's aim as making the best Gears game it could. A developer can want that work to hit hard; the PS5 player can want to share it with the friends who brought them through Reloaded. Those wishes meet at the store listing.
Why the PS5 Expectation Wasn't Random
In February 2024, then-Xbox chief Phil Spencer said four Xbox games would go to other platforms, Game Developer reported from an Xbox podcast. The selected games were older releases: two community-driven titles and two smaller ones. Spencer said the move would leave Xbox's fundamental strategy intact, while predicting that console exclusives would become less common over the next decade. The announcement gave players four games to watch, rather than a schedule for every future Xbox release.
Reloaded later brought PlayStation access into Gears itself. Its PS5 edition and cross-platform invites gave a mixed-console squad a reason to think the next game might keep them together. E-Day has changed the answer for this launch. That change hits the returning PS5 player more directly than any debate about which company is winning a console war: they played the last Gears release with their friends and can't currently buy the new one for the same machine.
At the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma presented E-Day as an Xbox Series X|S and PC release, IGN reported. Xbox later rejected the suggestion that it had made a last-minute platform decision, according to IGN. There is no announced PS5 date on the current E-Day listing. The group making plans for October 6 can't reserve a spot on the strength of a possible later port.
Xbox still has games headed to Sony's console. Forza Horizon 6 and Fable are set for PS5, while Call of Duty and Minecraft remain multiplatform, GamesRadar reported. Sharma told The New York Times, as quoted by GamesRadar, “Competition and collaboration can coexist.” A friend asking about Fable may get a different answer from one asking about E-Day, even though both games sit under Xbox.
For an Xbox player eager for Marcus and Dom's origin story, October 6 means a new campaign with PC and day-one Game Pass access too. For the PS5 player who joined the squad through Reloaded, it means watching the chat fill with E-Day plans they can't accept on their console. The rest of the group has to decide whether to start the new campaign now or save game night for everyone.
