Fortnite’s FNAF Pizzeria Puts Fortnitemares on the Map

Fortnite’s next Fortnitemares is scheduled to begin October 1, and Five Nights at Freddy’s is joining the Halloween event. Epic Games has announced Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria as a Battle Royale map location and told players to face animatronic bosses. Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy appear in the reveal. If you came for a look at the outfits, keep an eye on the building too: a pizzeria on the island could affect a match whether or not anyone buys a costume.

Epic’s promotional line, quoted by Eurogamer, tells players to “Face the animatronic animal bosses.” Picture the argument on squad voice chat: one player wants to see Freddy, another wants to keep moving, and somebody has to decide whether stopping at the pizzeria is worth arriving late to the next fight. That’s a possible Battle Royale decision, not a revealed objective or reward. A trailer can invite a squad into the building; it can’t make the squad agree on why they’re going.

Five Nights at Freddy’s revolves around surviving a night in a pizzeria with threatening animatronics. Put those characters in a building on the Battle Royale island, and the crossover has a chance to give players a place to investigate as well as faces to recognize. Other players can show up and interrupt the visit. Freddy may have the franchise name on the sign; he won’t be the only threat near the counter.

Fortnitemares Already Has a Playbook

Fortnitemares began in 2017. Over subsequent Octobers, Fortnite has made its Halloween event a home for horror guests. This year’s promotional artwork places Freddy Fazbear alongside Freddy Krueger and includes references to other properties. The poster gives the season its cast; the pizzeria announcement gives players a place to look for one of them.

Past Fortnitemares editions have combined horror crossovers, spooky changes to Battle Royale locations and limited-time items such as the Pumpkin Launcher and candy. The FNAF announcement fits that established mix. Its location-and-boss pitch also puts attention on the part of a crossover that a whole lobby may encounter, including players who never open the Item Shop. Whether the pizzeria offers a substantial encounter or a brief Halloween detour will depend on how it plays after launch.

Earlier Fortnitemares crossovers brought Rick Grimes and Jill Valentine, then Ghost Face and Jason Voorhees. Licensed horror faces have been part of the event for years, and map changes have, too. FNAF’s announced combination of a named franchise location and bosses is the feature to watch this time. Those earlier guests are selected examples, not a complete inventory of what their events let players do. The comparison explains why Freddy belongs at Fortnitemares; it cannot tell us yet whether his pizzeria will become a memorable stop.

The Shop Choice and the Match Choice

An outfit is a choice a player makes before a match. A map location can become a choice during one. If the pizzeria and bosses work as advertised, the teammate chasing a FNAF encounter could ask the rest of the squad to spend part of its match on that plan. The teammate trying to win has to consider the same stop as a route decision, with other players free to arrive as well. That’s where a live point of interest gets sharper than a character reveal: one person’s Halloween attraction can become everybody’s shared commitment.

The tension is also built into the two games’ premises. FNAF asks players to survive the occupants of one threatening place. Battle Royale gives a squad other people to worry about while it is there. A jump scare staged for a trailer may be interrupted by a fight with another team in a live match. That interruption could make the pizzeria more fun for players who want Fortnite chaos, or frustrate someone hoping to linger with the animatronics. Epic has advertised boss encounters, but their behavior, rewards and difficulty have yet to be laid out. October 1 will give players a better basis for judging the stop than a reveal trailer can.

As for dressing up, the trailer features Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy. Game Rant identifies possible skins and back blings from what it shows, but Epic has not supplied a confirmed catalogue of four purchasable outfits, prices or release schedules. Wait for an item listing before making spending plans. The announced pizzeria and boss pitch offer something else to watch on October 1: what happens when the squad’s Freddy fan marks the building and everyone else has to answer the ping.
