So what actually changes?
Here's the part that I keep coming back to, though. The platforms know their own engagement mechanics better than any researcher does. They have the behavioral data. They have the A/B test results. They know exactly which design choices make a user feel compelled rather than entertained. And the question of whether those choices are being made with any awareness of what the UCSF data is now confirming—that's a question about accountability, not just science.
The distinction between how and how much that the research surfaces is useful for parents navigating this right now—watching for the compulsive pattern, not just the clock—but it doesn't let the platforms off the hook. The compulsive pattern is at least partly something that gets engineered. If the science is saying that addictive social media use predicts ADHD symptom increases in teenage boys a year later, the people building the systems that create addictive social media use should probably have to answer for that in a more formal way than a Senate subcommittee hearing every couple of years.
The study is one data point, not a verdict. But it's a longitudinal study of 11,000 kids with temporal sequencing that points in one direction. And it lands in a world where the algorithm already knows your kid better than most adults in his life do.
That's the part I can't quite file away.
