Samsung 990 SSD Balances Gen 4 Speed With Trade-Offs

Samsung’s new 990 SSD pairs near-ceiling PCIe 4.0 speed with a 400 TBW endurance rating, three-year warranty and launch pricing that can put faster or longer-covered drives within financial arm’s reach.

That combination makes the plain 990 an oddly modern storage product. It can look excellent during the short, mixed workloads that define everyday PC use, then lose its footing when writes continue long enough to exhaust its faster cache. Buyers need to know which behavior resembles their Tuesday afternoon.

For Windows, applications, games and general storage, the answer may favor Samsung. Video editors shifting huge project folders, workstation users generating caches and anyone treating an SSD like a fire hose should inspect the caveats first.

Fast Where Most PCs Spend Their Time

Tech Notice measured approximately 7,136 MB/s sequential reads and 6,865 MB/s writes from the 990, placing it near the practical upper end of PCIe 4.0 performance. The review also gave the drive strong scores in system-drive, data-drive and secondary-storage tests, sometimes placing it near PCIe 5.0 models.

That does not make the interfaces equivalent. One benchmark result can compress differences that reappear under another workload, and PCIe generation labels reveal only the connection’s potential bandwidth. Controller behavior, NAND, firmware, cache design and access patterns all affect what reaches the user.

The reviewer made the right warning about Samsung’s headline figure: “We know that that means really nothing in real world benchmarks.” Sequential speed measures large, orderly transfers under controlled conditions. Booting Windows, launching a game and opening dozens of small application files involve more scattered activity.

In Tech Notice’s full system-drive test, the 990 scored 3,251 points and sat among the faster Gen 4 drives in that test set. The reviewer called it “one of the best, if not the best Gen 4 NVME drives I have ever tested for this test.” The final four words carry a lot of weight. SSD charts are portraits of workloads, not universal leaderboards carved into silicon tablets.

StorageReview’s independent Samsung 990 review also examines the drive’s DRAM-less design, benchmark behavior and value proposition. The absence of onboard DRAM helps explain Samsung’s intended lane: strong consumer performance without every component found on a premium workstation-oriented model. Host Memory Buffer lets the drive borrow a small portion of system memory for mapping duties, although that arrangement does not erase every disadvantage under prolonged pressure.

The Write-Speed Cliff Changes the Recommendation

Tech Notice’s consistency test wrote more than 20TB over a run lasting longer than 24 hours. The 990 landed near the bottom of the comparison group, behind several Gen 4 competitors. The reviewer’s assessment was blunt: “This is not a very good drive in terms of the consistency and overall performance.”

That result can coexist with the excellent system-drive score. Short bursts let an SSD route incoming data through faster cache, while an extended transfer eventually forces the drive to write directly to slower underlying NAND. It is the storage equivalent of sprinting to catch a bus, then being asked to continue to another county.

PCWorld’s separate assessment of sustained writes also tests the 990’s write behavior against Samsung’s claims. Together, the reviews point toward a workload split: ordinary desktop activity plays to the 990’s strengths, while long write-heavy jobs expose its compromises.

Cache details would help buyers quantify that split, but Tech Notice said Samsung did not provide a confirmed SLC cache figure in response to the reviewer’s inquiry. Unverified estimates should stay out of buying decisions.

TechPowerUp’s testing of SLC caching on the different 990 Pro illustrates the broader mechanism: write speed changes once available cache fills. Those 990 Pro measurements cannot supply a missing cache specification for the plain 990, but they show why a single “up to” write-speed number cannot describe an entire large-file transfer.

For gaming, the distinction may barely disturb the furniture. Downloads, updates and level loads usually mix idle periods with bursts of activity. A creator copying hundreds of gigabytes of footage, exporting intermediates or maintaining scratch data can hit the slower state much more often.

TBW and Warranty Need to Be Read Together

Samsung rates the 1TB model at 400 TBW and the 2TB version at 800 TBW, according to Tech Notice. TBW means terabytes written, so capacity scales the rating here. ITdaily’s discussion of the drive’s endurance ratings also puts the 1TB model’s 400 TBW figure beside its strong short-workload performance.

A TBW rating functions as a warranty threshold rather than a countdown timer displayed above the drive. Samsung’s official warranty coverage guidance explains that coverage depends on the applicable time period and TBW limit. Buyers should check the terms for their exact model and region instead of assuming every Samsung SSD receives the same protection.

The plain 990 carries three years of coverage according to the reviewed specifications. Tech Notice contrasted that with the five-year warranties and higher per-terabyte endurance figures available on several alternatives. That gap deserves more attention from write-heavy users than from someone installing a Steam library and occasionally moving vacation photos.

TBW also needs personal context. A user can check total host writes in Samsung Magician or another drive-monitoring utility, then compare that history with the rating. Someone writing 20TB per year faces a different calculation from a workstation producing hundreds of terabytes. Spec-sheet anxiety loves a large number without a denominator. Give it one.

Price Can Flip the Result Overnight

Tech Notice cited about $240 in the US and £180 in the UK for the 1TB model at the time of recording. At those prices, performance alone cannot carry the recommendation. The review identified a competing 1TB drive around $160, although regional pricing varied substantially.

SSD prices move like somebody bumped the table. Discounts can turn yesterday’s poor value into today’s easy pick, and Samsung’s own product stack can create awkward comparisons. Tom’s Hardware reported one sale where the faster Gen 5 Samsung 9100 Pro sat only $30 above a Gen 4 990 option. A buyer with a compatible PCIe 5.0 slot would have an obvious reason to compare the higher model.

The realistic shopping list should include the plain 990, discounted premium Gen 4 drives such as Samsung’s older 990 Pro, and competing models represented in the same benchmark class, including the WD Black SN850X, Kingston Fury Renegade and Lexar NM790. Their current prices, capacities, heatsink options and warranty terms matter more than where each landed on one chart.

Budget buyers can go further down the Gen 4 ladder if their work consists mainly of gaming and everyday computing. Saving money for 2TB rather than buying the fastest 1TB drive often improves life with a PC more than shaving seconds from a benchmark. Running out of space is a performance problem too, just one with more uninstall menus.

AI Marketing Creates a Practical Trust Problem

Samsung disclosed that AI tools assisted with promotional images examined by Tech Notice. The reviewer identified malformed M.2 slots, implausible RAM, missing mounting details and inconsistent cooling hardware in those images.

Those errors do not establish a flaw in the SSD itself. They do make the pictures poor references for installation and compatibility. Product imagery sits close to specifications, manuals and purchase buttons, so a motherboard slot that exists only in the algorithm’s imagination is more than decorative weirdness.

Buyers should use motherboard manuals, Samsung’s product documentation and photographs of the physical drive when checking fit. Marketing art can keep its cyberpunk glow. The screw hole needs to exist in this dimension.

The Samsung 990 makes the most coherent case as a responsive OS, application or game drive bought during a competitive sale. Its value weakens as write duration, annual data volume or price rises. The smartest benchmark is the workload on your own machine, followed immediately by the number on the checkout button.
