Every few years, a new acronym lands in the marketing world and everyone scrambles to decide whether it's the next big thing or just the previous big thing with a fresh coat of paint. AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is the current candidate. The question isn't whether AI is changing how people find information. It clearly is. The question is whether the playbook for responding to that change is as settled as the people selling courses would like you to believe.
A recent video from Ahrefs makes a serious attempt to map that playbook, and it's worth examining on the merits. The framing is straightforward: AI assistants like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews don't work like traditional search engines, so the strategies built for traditional search need to evolve. That argument is sound. What's more interesting is the specific mechanics the video lays out — and where the evidence behind them is strong versus where it starts to thin.
The Query Fan-Out Problem
The core insight Ahrefs leads with is genuinely useful. When you type a query into a traditional search engine, you get ranked results for that query. When you ask an AI assistant the same question, the system breaks your prompt into a cluster of smaller, more specific searches running simultaneously — a process the video calls "query fan-out."
The practical implication: if your content only addresses the obvious head term, you're invisible to the sub-queries the AI is actually using to construct its answer. You need topical coverage, not keyword targeting. This isn't a radical new idea — it rhymes with the "topic clusters" argument that SEO practitioners have been making for years — but the mechanism behind it is now more legible than it used to be.
Three Levers Ahrefs Says Drive Citations
According to Ahrefs' own research, three factors correlate most strongly with getting cited in AI responses: consensus, freshness, and authority.
Consensus means repetition across sources. The more places a claim about your brand appears, the more likely AI systems are to surface it. This maps logically to how large language models are trained — patterns reinforced across the web become the model's working reality. It also raises a question the video doesn't dwell on: at what point does manufactured consensus become manipulation? The video's advice here is to participate genuinely in communities rather than flood them. That's the right posture, but the line between participation and optimization gets blurry fast, as anyone who's watched brands colonize Reddit can attest.
Freshness is the second lever. Ahrefs reports that content cited by AI tends to be meaningfully more recent than what ranks in traditional Google results, and that for ChatGPT specifically, a large share of top-cited pages had been updated recently. The implication is clear enough: stale content is a liability in this new environment in a way it wasn't before. You can debate the exact numbers — Ahrefs is reporting its own research here, which means it's also implicitly making a case for its own tools — but the directional claim is plausible and consistent with what we know about how AI systems weight recency.
Authority, the third lever, turns out to be the most reassuring finding for anyone who's spent years building traditional SEO equity. Ahrefs' data suggests that the majority of AI Overview citations come from pages already ranking in Google's top results. In other words, the foundation hasn't changed. "If you're already ranking well in Google, you have a massive head start," the video notes. AEO isn't a clean break from SEO — it's an additional layer. The brands panicking about starting from scratch can relax, somewhat.
Content That Gets Cited
Ahrefs analyzed a large set of pages cited in AI Overviews and found that word count shows essentially no correlation with citation rates. More than half of cited pages come in under 1,000 words. If you've been producing exhaustive long-form content under the assumption that more is better, that assumption needs revisiting — at least for AI citation purposes.
Format, however, does matter. According to Ahrefs, list-based content — best-of roundups, comparisons, reviews — accounts for a disproportionate share of ChatGPT citations. The explanation is intuitive: these formats give AI systems clean, structured recommendations to extract and synthesize. An AI building a "best project management tools" response doesn't need your nuanced 3,000-word meditation on productivity philosophy. It needs a ranked list with clear entity labels.
The structural advice Ahrefs offers for individual pages is also worth noting. The video recommends what it calls "BLUF" — bottom line up front — meaning your key claim should open each section, not close it. AI systems, like impatient human readers, weight the beginning of a passage more heavily than the middle. If your argument builds to a conclusion, the conclusion might never get extracted. This is a real constraint of how retrieval and summarization systems work, and it's a legitimate reason to rethink how content is structured, not just what it covers.
The Off-Site Equation
Here's where AEO diverges most sharply from traditional SEO thinking. Ahrefs reports that across a large study of brands, branded web mentions — your brand name appearing on other people's pages — showed the strongest correlation with AI Overview visibility, stronger than backlinks or domain authority metrics. If that finding holds up at scale, it reorients the entire discipline. The goal isn't just to rank; it's to be mentioned.
The tier structure Ahrefs proposes makes intuitive sense: editorial coverage in authoritative publications, then user-generated content on platforms like Reddit and Quora, then your own channels as a distant third. The first tier is hardest to earn and most valuable. The second tier is accessible but requires genuine participation — the video is explicit that astroturfing defeats the purpose, partly because it risks polluting the very communities AI draws from. There's a version of brands gaming AI recommendations through manufactured presence that will eventually backfire, and Ahrefs seems aware of it even if the warning is brief.
The YouTube Angle
The video's most striking data point concerns YouTube. Ahrefs describes YouTube mentions as having an exceptionally strong correlation with ChatGPT visibility in their research — the strongest of any single factor they studied. The reasoning offered: AI language models were trained in part on YouTube transcript data, so YouTube isn't merely a platform AI cites, it's a source AI has internalized.
The strategic advice that follows is sensible: focus on "search hits" rather than "viral hits." A search hit is a video that ranks consistently in YouTube and Google search for a specific evergreen query, delivering steady traffic over months rather than a brief spike. These are the videos AI is most likely to cite because they've demonstrated sustained relevance to a particular topic. The checklist is basic video SEO — keyword in the title, keyword spoken in the video so audio indexing picks it up, timestamps for chapters — but basic done consistently still beats sophisticated done sporadically.
The Silent Blocker Problem
One practical point the video raises that gets insufficient attention elsewhere: a meaningful percentage of websites are actively blocking AI crawlers via robots.txt rules they may not even know are there. Cloudflare, which sits in front of a significant portion of the web's traffic, reportedly enables a feature that restricts AI bot access by default. If you're running Cloudflare and haven't checked this setting, your content may be invisible to the crawlers that determine AI citations regardless of how good the content is. Checking your robots.txt for disallow rules targeting GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended takes thirty seconds. It's the kind of unglamorous technical hygiene that gets skipped and then wondered about six months later.
Measuring Something Genuinely Difficult to Measure
The measurement section is where the video is most honest about the state of the discipline. AI referral traffic is trackable but almost certainly undercounted — not all AI platforms pass referral data consistently, and users who see a brand mentioned in ChatGPT often open a separate browser tab and search directly rather than clicking through. That conversion gets attributed to organic search, not AI.
Ahrefs' own reported numbers illustrate the mismatch: AI search accounted for a small fraction of their site visits but drove a much larger share of sign-ups — a conversion rate dramatically higher than organic search. They say they only discovered this discrepancy through self-reported attribution, the old-fashioned "how did you hear about us?" question. That's the kind of finding that should give any analytics-first marketer pause. The most important signal was hiding in a survey field, not a dashboard.
The honest read on AEO in 2025 is this: the underlying dynamics are real, the measurement infrastructure is immature, and the window for early-mover advantage may be genuine — or it may be the same window that's been "wide open" in every technology marketing pitch since 1995. The difference this time is that Ahrefs is at least showing its work.
