What Overthinking Actually Is and How to Slow It Down
Psychologists split overthinking into rumination and worry. A recent video breaks down the neuroscience and offers three CBT-based tools worth trying.

My personal record for replaying a single conversation is probably four days. The conversation lasted about ninety seconds. The postmortem analysis: considerably longer.
If that sounds familiar, a recent video from the Turn Wiser channel, "People Who Think Too Much", does a solid job of mapping the neuroscience behind why brains get stuck in these loops and offers three practical tools drawn from metacognitive therapy and CBT. I want to walk through both the framework and the tools, because one deserves more scrutiny than the others.
The two-state model
Psychologists split overthinking into two distinct patterns. Rumination is backward-facing: the mental replay of past events, regrets, mistakes. As the video puts it, "you become the detective, the judge, and the jury for a crime that has already happened, and the verdict is always guilty." Worry is forward-facing: the catastrophic simulation of futures that haven't happened and may never happen. Rumination correlates strongly with depression; worry is the engine of anxiety. Most chronic overthinkers cycle between both, which is its own kind of exhausting.
Psychology Today notes that overthinking often masquerades as productive problem-solving, which is part of what makes it sticky. You feel like you're working on something. You're not. You're running a simulation that consumes energy without producing output.
The video identifies four psychological drivers: anxiety (uncertainty reads as threat, so the brain tries to mentally prepare for every bad outcome), perfectionism (the fear of wrong choices creates analysis paralysis), intolerance for uncertainty (running contingency plans as a ritual to manufacture a feeling of control), and what psychologists call metacognitive beliefs, the conviction that worrying is productive, that ruminating on mistakes prevents future ones, that the overthinking is simply who you are.
That last driver is the one I find most interesting, and most underappreciated. The first three are about the content of anxious thoughts. Metacognitive beliefs are about your relationship to the act of thinking itself. If you believe worry is useful, you'll protect it. You'll resist any technique that asks you to set it down.
The neurology, briefly
The video grounds all of this in the default mode network (DMN), the brain's idle-state system that activates when you're not focused on an external task. Daydreaming, self-reflection, mental time travel: all DMN activity. For many chronic overthinkers, the DMN is hyperactive, hijacking rest periods that are supposed to allow recovery. The video uses an image: trying to suppress unwanted thoughts is like holding a beach ball underwater. The suppression effort makes the eventual resurgence worse.
This is the neurological argument against "just don't think about it," and it's a good one. Fighting thoughts directly recruits attentional resources toward the very thing you're trying to avoid. The three-step strategy the video proposes works around this problem rather than through it.
The three tools
Labeling. When you catch your mind spinning, pause and name what's happening. "This is rumination." "I'm worrying right now." Don't engage with the content of the thought. The label creates a small gap between you and the thought, enough to interrupt the automatic spiral. This is a core technique in metacognitive therapy, and the research behind it is reasonably solid. It works by shifting from first-person immersion in the thought (the experience of worrying) to third-person observation of the process (noticing that worrying is occurring). Small distinction, different neural signature.
The worry appointment. This one is where I'd push back slightly on the presentation. The technique is real: designate a 15-minute window each day, say 5:00 to 5:15 p.m., as your official worry time. When anxious thoughts arise outside that window, acknowledge them and defer: "I'll add that to the 5 p.m. agenda." Writing them down helps. When the window arrives, you sit with your list and worry as hard as you want. When the 15 minutes end, you stop.
The video correctly notes that this validates the worry rather than fighting it, and breaks the false urgency that makes anxious thoughts feel like emergencies requiring immediate attention. Studies do support worry postponement as a way to reduce the frequency and duration of daily worry. What the video glosses over is that the technique requires a foundation of metacognitive awareness before it can work. If you haven't done some version of step one (labeling, noticing you're in a loop), the worry appointment is just a scheduled time to spiral. The steps are more interdependent than the linear presentation suggests.
Grounding. The 5-4-3-2-1 technique: five things you can see, four you can feel, three you can hear, two you can smell, one you can taste. The mechanism the video describes is neurologically plausible: active sensory engagement pulls cognitive resources away from the DMN. You cannot simultaneously be absorbed in a catastrophic future simulation and fully attending to the texture of your shirt. The brain doesn't multitask that way.
The video adds a companion move: take one small physical action related to what you're overthinking. Ruminating about an email you sent? Stand up and stretch. Anxious about a project? Open a document and write one sentence. The action breaks analysis paralysis by proving to your nervous system that you can do something, that the situation is not beyond your agency.
Tiny Buddha's overview of overthinking patterns makes a useful distinction here: the small action doesn't have to be the right action or a complete action. Its function is behavioral, not strategic. You're not solving the problem; you're exiting the mental rehearsal state.
What the video doesn't address
The framework here is solidly CBT-adjacent, and the tools are drawn from real research traditions. My honest read: they're worth trying, they work for a lot of people, and they're not sufficient for everyone.
Chronic overthinking can be a feature of anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, and ADHD, among other things. For people in those categories, three self-help techniques might reduce symptoms at the margin but won't touch the underlying architecture. The video is careful not to promise a cure, and the language around "retraining" is appropriately modest. But it also doesn't mention that for some overthinkers, the next step after these tools is a therapist, not a YouTube subscription.
The other thing missing is any acknowledgment of context. Uncertainty is harder to tolerate when the uncertainty is about rent, or a medical result, or a job in a contracting industry. Metacognitive techniques work better when the background level of actual threat is manageable. Telling someone whose situation is precarious that they need to retrain their DMN skips a step.
None of this undermines the tools. It just maps the territory more honestly. "Your brain is doing this to protect you" is true and useful. So is: the protection is more necessary in some lives than others, and the solution isn't always interior.
The video's strongest claim is also its most defensible one: overthinking is a pattern the brain learned, not a character trait you're stuck with. Patterns can change. These particular techniques give the brain something to do other than spin. Whether a 15-minute worry window is the right container for your specific anxiety is an experiment only you can run.
