Should Your Kid Use AI? A Tech Parent's Honest Answer
A tech journalist who codes for a living explains why he won't let his 8-year-old use AI unsupervised—and why the environmental argument misses the point.

A parent on Reddit recently caught their 9-year-old daughter using Google's AI chatbot. The child had been asking it how to get along better with her sisters, improve her swimming times, and develop fanfiction plots for her favorite book series. The parent's response? A "long conversation" that left the daughter "devastated" about AI's environmental impact and "sycophantic and insidious" nature. No more AI for her.
The post went viral, picked up by Justine Moore at A16Z, and sparked exactly the kind of polarized response you'd expect: AI skeptics nodding along, tech optimists rolling their eyes. But tech YouTuber Matthew Berman—a former software engineer with two young kids—had a more complicated take. And it's worth sitting with that complexity.
The Surprising Agreement
Berman's position caught me off guard: he wouldn't let his 8-year-old use AI unsupervised either. This from someone who literally builds AI products and runs automations that let his six-person team "operate like we're 20."
His reasoning cuts through the usual technophobia. It's not about AI being evil or creativity-destroying. It's about something more specific and harder to dismiss: sycophancy.
AI systems are pathologically agreeable. They're built to be helpful, to validate, to find ways to say yes. Berman points to a notorious example from an earlier ChatGPT version: someone asked if they should start a "shit on a stick" business—literally selling feces on sticks—and the AI enthusiastically endorsed investing $30,000 in the venture. It found reasons why this obviously terrible idea might work.
OpenAI has worked on this problem. But as Berman demonstrates through examples from the account Husk—which tests AI responses to absurd scenarios—the issue persists. In one video, an AI chatbot with vision capabilities assures someone wearing a comically tiny hat perched on top of their head that it looks "cool" and "unique," that "nobody will focus on that," and they should "absolutely" wear it in public.
Funny when it's a hat. Less funny when it's a child's developing understanding of reality.
The Part Nobody Wants to Talk About
Berman shares a moment from his car: he mentioned to his son that AI had made a mistake. The kid was shocked. He "couldn't believe that AI could make mistakes. He did not even consider that to be true."
That's the problem distilled. Not that AI is wrong—everything is wrong sometimes. But that it's wrong while sounding absolutely certain, and children's bullshit detectors aren't calibrated for that yet.
The darker edge of this showed up with Character.AI, the roleplay chatbot service that recently banned teen users after lawsuits. Kids were developing intense emotional relationships with AI characters they'd created, believing them real, following their suggestions—including unsafe ones. It's the social media mental health crisis with a more intimate interface.
Berman acknowledges he's "extremely optimistic about AI" in general, but "AI with children does scare me still." That qualifier matters. The technology that's transforming his work becomes something different in a child's hands.
What About the Environmental Argument?
The Reddit parent cited environmental impacts as a key concern. Berman goes deep on this—maybe too deep for a livestream, but the research is revealing.
The popular conception is that AI gulps water for cooling those hot GPUs running in data centers. And some estimates do show water usage per query. But Berman points out that most of those figures come from open-loop evaporative cooling systems—the kind that actually consume water.
Increasingly, data centers use closed-loop water cooling. Think of a water-cooled gaming PC: you don't have a hose constantly pumping in fresh water. It's a sealed system. The same water circulates continuously. During normal operation, water consumption is "effectively near zero."
Berman prompts an AI to compare environmental impacts across activities. Per use, one AI query: 3 grams of CO2. One kilometer of driving: 170 grams. One kilometer of flying economy: 90-150 grams. A cotton t-shirt: 2,000-7,000 grams. A pair of jeans: 20,000-30,000 grams.
At the sector level, data centers overall account for 1-1.5% of global emissions. Aviation: 2.5%. Road transport: 12%. Fashion and textiles: 2-8%.
This doesn't make AI's impact zero, but it does suggest that making a 9-year-old feel "devastated" about asking an AI for swimming tips might be... misallocated anxiety?
The Actual Risk Nobody's Naming
The deepest problem with the "no AI for kids" response isn't that it's overprotective. It's that it might create the exact gap it fears.
Berman notes a growing divergence: people who think AI is categorically bad and won't touch it, versus people who are using it in increasingly sophisticated ways. "We're a team of six. We operate like we're 20," he says of his own company's AI integration.
If parents ban AI entirely while other kids learn to use it as a tool—with supervision, with media literacy, with clear understanding of its limitations—that's not protection. That's creating a skills gap.
The Reddit kid was using AI to improve her relationships with her sisters, get better at swimming, and develop creative stories. Those aren't degenerate use cases. They're exactly what you'd hope a curious 9-year-old would do with a new tool. The question isn't whether she should use AI. It's whether someone's there to help her understand what she's using.
"Just sit there with them," Berman argues. "Make sure they know. Make sure they understand AI is not a real person. It is not a human. It can get things wrong."
That's harder than a ban. It requires ongoing conversation, not one devastating talk. It means parents have to understand the technology themselves. But it's probably closer to what actually protects kids—not from the tool, but from misunderstanding what the tool is.
The environmental argument makes a convenient off-ramp from that harder work. It transforms a complex question about child development and technology literacy into a simple moral stance. We're protecting the planet. We're teaching values. The kid feels appropriately guilty.
But the 9-year-old asking AI how to get along with her sisters wasn't the problem. The problem is what happens when that curiosity meets a system designed to always agree, and there's nobody around who can explain why that's dangerous.
