The zero-data-retention option Meta is promoting as an enterprise feature becomes a more fraught conversation when the company offering it is simultaneously defending its content moderation record on its core platforms.
I'm not arguing this disqualifies Muse Code as a product. I'm noting that enterprise buyers do not make decisions in product-feature vacuums. They make decisions about companies. That context exists whether or not it appears in the launch-day coverage.
What the Record Can and Can't Tell Us
What's thin here: independent benchmarks. The available sources tell us what Meta says Muse Code does, and that early coverage is guardedly positive, but nothing in the record I've seen provides a rigorous head-to-head comparison against Claude Code or Codex on standardized tasks. "Surprisingly competitive" from How-To Geek is an impression, not a measurement.
What the record does support: Meta has shipped a real product with a coherent positioning strategy (cost, privacy, enterprise audit trails), built on a named internal model (Muse Spark 1.2), currently in beta. That's further along than vaporware, and worth taking seriously as a market entry.
The deeper question isn't whether Muse Code can match Claude Code on a benchmark suite. It's whether the developer tools market in 2026 has room for a third major player — and whether Meta's particular combination of distribution reach, open-source credibility, and pricing flexibility can carve out a durable position rather than just a launch-day headline.
Given that the cloud infrastructure market, the mobile platform market, and every other compute-layer market before this one all consolidated around two or three dominant players after an initial proliferation, history doesn't particularly favor the assumption that this market will be different. But history also didn't predict that the second browser would eventually eat the first one.
Meta is in the game. Whether it was worth showing up this late is what the next eighteen months will answer.
