United's 2027 MileagePlus Rules Shift the Path to Status
United will drop flight segments as a route to Premier status in 2027 and raise the 1K threshold. See who faces a higher bar and why airfare alone won't tell the story.

United will stop counting flight segments as a route to MileagePlus Premier status in 2027. Members will qualify by accumulating Premier Qualifying Points, or PQPs, while Premier 1K, its highest published tier, will require 32,000 PQPs. The change applies to activity in 2027 for status in 2028. Anyone working toward status through 2026 activity is still playing under the current rules.
The new formula is shorter. For someone whose work sends them through a lot of connections on fares that generate relatively few PQPs, it also removes a route they could actually use. That is the question to ask before deciding whether United has made status harder for you: Were you going to qualify on points alone, or did the flight count do some of the lifting?
The Route United is Closing
Under the 2026 rules, members can qualify through PQPs alone or through a combination of PQPs and Premier Qualifying Flights, called PQFs. The combination route asks for more flight segments in exchange for a lower PQP threshold. Those two routes still apply in 2026: Silver requires either 6,000 PQPs or 15 PQFs plus 5,000 PQPs; Gold requires 12,000 PQPs or 30 PQFs plus 10,000 PQPs; Platinum requires 18,000 PQPs or 45 PQFs plus 15,000 PQPs. For 1K, the choices are 28,000 PQPs or 60 PQFs plus 22,000 PQPs.
For 2027 activity, the PQP targets will be 6,000 for Silver, 12,000 for Gold, 18,000 for Platinum and 32,000 for 1K. The points-only targets for the first three tiers stay put. Their segment-plus-points alternatives disappear. The 1K points-only target rises, and its alternative disappears too.
A traveler aiming for Gold who would have reached 30 PQFs and 10,000 PQPs this year has a clear problem next year if their qualifying activity stays the same: the flight count no longer closes the gap to 12,000 PQPs. Someone who already reaches Gold on PQPs alone faces no change to that tier's published points target. The itinerary can look just as busy in both cases. United's new test gives the busy calendar less say.
Flight segments do retain one job. Members must still take at least four flights on United or United Express during the year to be Premier-eligible; partner-airline flights do not satisfy that minimum. Think of it as an entry requirement, rather than a way to lower the PQP target. A traveler could clear the points threshold through eligible activity and still need to check those four flights.
PQPs also deserve their own line in your budget spreadsheet. They generally track eligible airfare spending before government taxes, but eligible credit-card activity and some other qualifying activity can contribute; partner tickets have their own earning formulas. A 32,000-PQP target therefore is not automatically a $32,000 airfare bill. It is a target in United's qualification currency, and how you earn that currency determines the bill. Buying extra flights solely to add segments, meanwhile, will no longer help you meet a PQF target because there will be no PQF target.
Why 1K's History Changes the Picture
United was already raising the bar before this announcement. A year-by-year threshold table shows that in 2024, 1K required either 54 flights plus 18,000 PQPs or 24,000 PQPs alone. In 2025 and 2026, those choices became 60 flights plus 22,000 PQPs or 28,000 PQPs alone. In 2027, the published route becomes 32,000 PQPs alone.
Keeping the two old routes separate prevents some very persuasive-looking bad math. The 18,000-PQP figure from 2024 came with a 54-flight condition. It was never the points-only requirement. Comparing it directly with 2027's 32,000-PQP points-only rule shows how the segment route has changed, but it cannot describe the increase faced by somebody who has always qualified without that route. Their relevant historical figures are 24,000, then 28,000, then 32,000 PQPs.
That progression explains why two members can read the same announcement and react differently. The member who previously qualified through 60 flights and 22,000 PQPs loses the lower-points option. The member who previously qualified through 28,000 PQPs without using the segment option faces a higher target but no change in qualification method. Either way, a flyer considering a late-year push needs to compare projected qualifying points with the right year's rule, rather than counting trips and hoping the old shortcut survives.
United has a case for the simpler formula. Jarad Fisher, its president of MileagePlus, told The Points Guy that the airline wanted one consistent metric; he said a majority of members already earn status through PQPs. If that description fits your account, removing a second route may make the rules easier to follow without changing your Silver, Gold or Platinum target. It does not resolve the narrower, practical complaint from members who used the route being removed. Fisher's majority claim does not tell an individual segment-heavy flyer how much more qualifying activity they will need.
United also plans a 2027 PQP head start for members with an eligible United credit card, tied to the Premier status they hold entering the year. The reported deposits are 300 PQPs for Silver, 600 for Gold, 900 for Platinum and 1,600 for 1K. That can change a cardholder's projected gap, but an eligible card and existing status are conditions, so treating the deposit as everyone's starting balance would be a fairly expensive spreadsheet mistake. Check the applicable card terms before making a spending decision around it.
Delta Offers a Comparison, Not a Price Tag
Delta already uses one qualification metric, Medallion Qualification Dollars, or MQDs. Its published rules for 2027 Medallion status set Diamond at 28,000 MQDs, earned through activity in calendar year 2026. United's announced 32,000-PQP 1K rule applies to 2027 activity for 2028 status. Putting the two numbers side by side without their years would compare different qualification periods.
The earning channels differ as well. Delta lists eligible flights, qualifying purchases on certain Delta American Express cards and Delta Vacations activity as ways to build MQDs. Its card rules include a head start for eligible cardholders. United's PQP rules also extend beyond buying United tickets, while retaining that four-United-flight minimum. Both airlines can express a status target in a single number while requiring a traveler to understand several ways of reaching it. The headline numbers alone cannot tell you which program costs less to use or which tier will deliver better benefits.
For a budget-conscious flyer, the useful comparison is closer to home: take the trips and eligible activity you expect in the qualification year, estimate what they earn under each program's rules, and then consider what you would spend to close any gap. If that gap requires trips you would not otherwise take, put their cost next to the benefits you expect to use. United has made its qualification equation shorter. Your travel budget still has to do the long division.
