Ranking Inside AI Search: Speed vs. Substance

Here's the tension at the heart of AI search optimization, and nobody talking about it seems to notice it's even there: the tactics that get you ranked fastest are almost perfectly opposed to the qualities that keep you ranked longest.
Julian Goldie, an SEO consultant with a substantial YouTube following, released a video making the case that Grok — xAI's answer engine — has quietly become a meaningful search surface, and that the ranking window sitting open inside it right now is one of the cleaner opportunities in recent SEO history. He's not wrong about the opportunity. But his method, examined closely, contains a contradiction that anyone building a real content strategy should think through before sprinting.
The video is direct and specific, which puts it ahead of most content in this space. Goldie lays out a four-step process: find a keyword trending on X before anyone else has covered it, build content across multiple platforms targeting that same keyword, push it through a fast-indexing tool to get search engines noticing immediately, then check your results within a day and iterate. The core insight is that Grok, being tightly integrated with X's real-time conversation stream, surfaces genuinely fresh topics faster than keyword tools built on historical crawl data. On brand-new comparison queries — the kind that emerge when a new tool launches and people start asking which one to use — there's no established content to beat. You can be first, and first is often enough.
Goldie's demonstration centered on a query that had appeared recently on X. He claims his team published content around that keyword across multiple platforms and monitored where it appeared. The results he shows in the video are his own screenshots — not independently verified — but the underlying mechanism he's describing is real and worth taking seriously. Grok does cite web sources in its answers. AI answer engines do favor fresh, specific content over generic overviews. And queries around newly launched tools genuinely do have no incumbent content sitting in the way.
"When you compete where nobody else is competing yet, you don't wait in line," Goldie says. "There is no line."
That's accurate. It's also the setup for the question he doesn't answer.
Speed Gets You In. Then What?
The Grok angle Goldie finds most compelling — and the one that's genuinely new — is that Grok's indexing behavior appears faster than other AI search tools. He observed that after publishing and submitting content, Grok was pulling his pages into answers before other AI platforms had picked them up. That's an interesting data point, though it comes from a single test on a single keyword, reported by the person with a financial interest in the conclusion. Take it as a hypothesis worth testing yourself, not a settled finding.
The more durable insight in the video has nothing to do with speed. It's buried near the end, almost as an aside: Goldie noticed that the pages Grok actually cited had something specific in common. "They were honest, hands-on, and specific," he says. "It had case studies, it had testimonials, it had actual examples of me using both tools... it's adding information gain. It's adding something new that people have never seen before on that topic."
That's the part that matters, and it sits in direct tension with the rest of the method. The four-step system he outlines is optimized for speed — find a trend, publish fast, index immediately, check tomorrow. But the content that earns citations, by his own observation, is content with genuine hands-on experience embedded in it. Real comparisons. Actual testing. Industry knowledge that a generic AI-drafted overview cannot replicate.
You can move fast and write well. But the video's framing — "You don't need a team, you need the method" — implies that the content creation part is mostly handled by AI tools, with human quality control layered on top. That's a reasonable workflow for some content. It's a poor fit for the kind of first-person, experience-rich material Goldie himself identifies as what Grok prefers to cite.
This isn't a contradiction that kills the method. It's a constraint that shapes how it should be applied. If you have genuine expertise in your field — if you've actually used the tools you're comparing, if you know things about your industry that a language model summarizing the web doesn't — then the speed advantage Goldie describes is real and worth capturing. Get your genuine experience published faster, on more platforms, around fresher keywords. That's a legitimate competitive edge.
If the plan is to use the trending keyword as a trigger for AI-generated content dressed up with light human review, you'll probably get early placement on queries with no competition. Whether that placement holds as the topic matures and better-sourced content appears is a different question — one the 24-hour feedback loop isn't designed to answer.
The Structural Shift Is Real, The Gold Rush Is Not
Grok's emergence as a model worth watching on multiple fronts — not just coding — is well documented. What Goldie is identifying here is a consequence of that architecture: an answer engine with real-time web access creates a citation layer that didn't exist before, and that layer has its own ranking dynamics distinct from Google's.
That's worth paying attention to regardless of your feelings about the specific four-step framework. When people ask Grok a question instead of running a Google search, they get a synthesized answer with sourced links. The websites in those links are the new first page. Whether Grok's user base is currently large enough to move meaningful traffic is a separate question from whether the dynamic is real — it is — and from whether it will matter more in two years than it does today.
"The rankings inside Grok's answers — almost nobody is competing for them yet," Goldie says. The first part of that sentence is almost certainly true. The second part has a short shelf life.
Every time a new ranking surface opens up, the earliest movers find it easy, and then the method gets systematized and sold, and then the surface gets crowded, and then quality starts to matter more than timing again. We've watched this cycle run through Google's algorithm updates, through social media reach, through YouTube SEO, through podcast discovery. Goldie is describing the early phase of that cycle for AI answer engines. That phase is real. It also ends.
What This Actually Means for Your Content Strategy
The concrete question for anyone with a website or a content operation: should you be thinking about Grok and other AI answer engines as ranking surfaces distinct from Google?
Yes, and you should have started six months ago. The companies and publishers that build a track record of being cited by AI answer engines — that earn what Goldie calls the "trust" of these systems — are accumulating an asset that compounds. Each citation is a signal. Grok, like any retrieval system, develops patterns around which sources it returns to.
The practical implication isn't to flood the zone with AI-generated content on trending keywords. The practical implication is to figure out what your genuine expertise actually is — what you know from direct experience that a crawled summary of the web cannot reproduce — and to get that expertise published in forms that AI answer engines can find, read, and cite.
Goldie's trending-keyword mechanism is a useful way to surface fresh queries where you're not fighting established content. That's the right place to apply whatever speed advantage you can muster. But the content at the end of that process needs to be the real thing.
"AI engines are hunting for exactly that kind of specific industry deep knowledge and honest answers only real people can create," Goldie says. He's right. The irony is that the system he's built around getting there first works best when what you're getting there first with is something you couldn't have outsourced anyway.
Start with what you actually know. Figure out which new questions in your field don't have good answers yet. Write the honest version. Then worry about speed.
