So what does "AI avatar of an instructor" actually mean here? These aren't chatbots with a professor's photo slapped on them. HeyGen's tech creates interactive digital likenesses — the avatar looks like the instructor, speaks like them, and is trained to deliver feedback relevant to the learning context. In HBS Foundry's case, TechBuzz reports that use cases include real-time feedback during pitch practice and simulated board meetings.
That second one is worth pausing on. Pitch practice is table stakes for any entrepreneur program — you can get that from a YouTube video and a mirror. Simulated board meetings are different. Board meetings are high-stakes, adversarial, and deeply contextual. If the AI can actually replicate that pressure — the probing follow-up questions, the skeptical silence, the pivot-or-die moment — then this is more than a cost-cutting exercise. It's a different kind of training environment entirely.
Whether it delivers on that promise is a question the available sources don't fully answer. That's not a knock on the program; it's just early days. But it's the question worth watching.

You're not getting the network, the credential, the recruiting pipeline, or the two years of immersive case-method education that an HBS MBA confers. Those things have enormous real-world value, and $75,000 (or more, accounting for opportunity cost) buys access to all of them bundled together.
What $699 buys is a structured program, access to AI avatars of real instructors, and — if the simulation quality holds up — genuinely useful practice reps for the early stages of building a company. That's a meaningful product. It's just a different product.
The more interesting question isn't whether HBS Foundry replaces the MBA. It's what happens when the people who couldn't afford or access HBS in any form now have a credible on-ramp. That's where the actual disruption lives.

That's a vendor dependency that traditional course delivery doesn't carry in quite the same way. When your professor is a startup's product, the course roadmap and the startup's roadmap become entangled.
What This Signals for Everyone Else
The honest read on HBS Foundry isn't that it's a finished vision of AI-powered education — it's a probe. The pure-AI-instructor model raises different questions about expertise, accountability, and trust that nobody has fully answered yet.
