There's something fascinating about watching someone teach you how to use a tool they don't fully understand themselves. That's the vibe I got from Andrew Brown's just-released 4.5-hour course on OpenAI Codex—and honestly? It might be the most honest take on AI coding tools I've seen.

Brown, who's built an entire certification empire around tech courses (50+ and counting), spent nearly five hours walking through Codex, OpenAI's command-line coding assistant. But unlike the usual "AI will revolutionize everything" energy, his course keeps hitting a wall: OpenAI won't explain how their tool actually works.

The Black Box Problem

Here's where it gets interesting. Brown compares Codex to Claude Code, another AI coding assistant, and points out something critical: Claude actually documents their "agentic loop"—the step-by-step process of how the AI thinks through and executes coding tasks. Codex? Mystery box.

"The key difference between something like Cloud Code and Codex is that we just don't know with Codex because they do not tell you how the internal mechanism works," Brown explains in the course. He's read OpenAI's technical documentation. He's tried asking the AI itself. Result: educated guesses at best, hallucinations at worst.

This isn't just academic curiosity. When you're trusting an AI to write production code, understanding its reasoning process—or at least knowing what it's optimizing for—matters. Codex takes in a prompt, does... something involving model inference and tool calls, loops until it gets a result, and spits out code. The details? Proprietary.

What We Do Know

Brown's course does map out the terrain that OpenAI will share. Codex runs as a CLI tool (command-line interface for the non-technical), works across multiple surfaces—your terminal, IDE, desktop app, browser—and specializes in coding operations while technically being capable of documentation, builds, file searches, and general research.

The model selection reveals some of the usual AI trade-offs: speed vs. cost vs. intelligence. OpenAI offers GPT-specific Codex models optimized for coding tasks, plus their standard model tiers—basically a "Goldilocks" default, a faster "mini" version, and a beefier "max" option. Brown walks through the pricing (ranging from dirt cheap to "wait, how many tokens did I just use?") and notes that OpenAI at least provides model cards with cost and capability details.

One thing that caught my attention: the concept of "reasoning effort" as separate from model intelligence. You can dial up or down how much computational power the AI throws at a problem, which affects both your context window size and your bill. It's like choosing between having your AI coding assistant think really hard or just wing it—except the course can't fully explain when you'd want which, because again, opacity.

The Certification Angle

Brown built this as a certification course—50 multiple-choice questions, 70% passing grade, valid for two years. The pragmatic framing is refreshing: "AI is not going to help you out. You still need to learn" foundational programming skills. The cert exists as a "goalpost," not a substitute for actual knowledge.

He recommends 6-12 hours of study depending on your background, with the honest admission that if you've already done his Claude Code course, this will feel pretty similar. "There's less going on in Codex," he notes, which is why this is a 4.5-hour course instead of 12.

The course structure follows Brown's usual pattern: lectures, hands-on labs, practice exams. He's upfront about the business model—this free version exists to drive people to the paid Exam Pro platform where the content stays updated and you can actually take the final exam. Practical? Sure. Transparent? Absolutely.

What's Missing (And What That Means)

The course outline reveals some interesting gaps. Brown includes a section on "Orchestrating Sub-Agents and Worker Teams" but admits upfront he's not sure if this will even work. "If we can, I'm going to try to do that in this course. If we can't, then you know that I wasn't able to." That's either admirably honest or slightly concerning, depending on your perspective.

There's also the reality that much of this course is about workarounds and management—managing context windows, tracking token usage, understanding when the AI might hallucinate, dealing with truncation issues. The "agentic" part sounds futuristic, but the actual experience involves a lot of babysitting.

Brown mentions security features like sandbox environments and approval policies (you can set Codex to ask permission before running certain commands), which is reassuring. But it also underscores a tension: we're giving these tools significant access to our codebases while operating with limited visibility into their decision-making processes.

The Broader Context

This isn't unique to Codex. The entire AI coding assistant space—GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, Gemini CLI—operates with varying levels of transparency. Some companies share more than others. OpenAI, historically, shares less.

What makes Brown's course valuable isn't that it unlocks Codex's secrets (it can't). It's that it documents what's actually knowable and what remains frustratingly opaque. That's useful information when you're deciding whether to integrate these tools into your workflow.

The course also sits within Brown's broader "AI Certification Roadmap," which includes tracks for Claude, general AI essentials, and what he calls "from zero" courses for people with no tech background. The roadmap itself is interesting—it treats different AI coding tools as interchangeable skill sets you layer onto foundational knowledge, not competing religions you pledge allegiance to.

Developers are already using these tools. The question isn't whether AI coding assistants work (they do, sometimes spectacularly, sometimes hilariously poorly). The question is whether we can make informed decisions about how they work without full transparency from the companies building them. Brown's course is basically a 4.5-hour case study in trying to answer that question—and running into walls.
