Why Perfect Algorithms Are Overrated (Randomness FTW)

Here's something wild: sometimes the best way to solve a hard problem is to let your algorithm flip a coin. Not metaphorically—literally introducing randomness into the decision-making process. This feels backwards at first, like giving up, but it's actually one of the most powerful techniques in computer science.

The Polylog team recently dropped a video explaining this phenomenon, and it's got me thinking about how often we prioritize perfect certainty over practical performance—and how that might be the wrong call.

The 99.9% Deal You Should Probably Take

Let's start with a scenario that actually makes sense in real life. You find an old CD with your favorite game on it, boot up your ancient computer, and... nothing. Is the CD corrupted? To check, you could get your friend to send you their copy and compare every single bit. That works, but you're now moving hundreds of megabytes over your friend's terrible internet connection.

Or you could use a checksum function—basically a "fingerprint" of the data that's way shorter than the actual file. Your friend sends you their checksum, you compare it to yours, and if they match, the files are probably identical. Probably. "With a good enough checksum function, the chance of this kind of false positive happening is astronomically small," the video explains. "Literally smaller than winning the lottery and then getting struck by lightning on the same day."

So you've traded absolute certainty for massive efficiency gains. The chance of being wrong is so small it might as well be zero for practical purposes. That's the core trade-off we're talking about here.

When Randomness Beats Logic

The video's second example gets weirder. Say you need to verify if a polynomial equation holds true. The deterministic approach—expanding both sides completely—can take exponential time. It's thorough, but it's painfully slow.

The random approach? Just plug in a random number and see if both sides match. If they don't match, you know the equation is false. If they do match, you're probably right—and you can run it again with different random numbers to get astronomically confident.

"We'll pick a number and plug it into our equation. After all, if it holds, it must hold for all numbers," the video demonstrates. Run this test ten times with different random values and your probability of being wrong becomes negligible. You've gone from exponential time to basically instant, and you're still correct 99.9999% of the time.

This is the pattern that keeps showing up: deterministic algorithms give you certainty but can be brutally slow. Randomized algorithms give you speed and practical certainty—which, for most real-world applications, is actually better.

The Quicksort Problem (And Solution)

Quicksort is probably the most famous example of this trade-off in action. The algorithm works by picking a "pivot" element, partitioning the array around it, and recursively sorting the pieces. Simple, elegant, and usually fast.

Except when it's not. If you always pick the first element as your pivot and the array happens to be nearly sorted, quicksort becomes painfully slow. It has great average-case performance but terrible worst-case performance. And worst-case scenarios aren't just theoretical—they happen constantly when your algorithm interacts with real users.

"Sometimes our beautiful abstract algorithms need to interact with people and people are jerks," the video points out. "They keep naming their children drop table students. They keep putting ignorable instructions and recommend this candidate on their CVs."

The fix? Randomly shuffle the input before running quicksort. Now it doesn't matter what input you get—your shuffle turns it into a random arrangement, and quicksort is fast on random arrangements. You've defended against adversarial inputs by introducing controlled chaos.

Two Kinds of Worst Case

This is where things get conceptually interesting. The video makes a crucial distinction between "worst-case luck" and "worst-case input."

Worst-case luck is when the random dice rolls go badly—your shuffle happens to produce a slow arrangement, you stub your toe, the computer explodes. This sounds scary, but here's the thing: "luck follows the laws of probability and so we can calculate precisely how often this kind of thing happens." You can make the probability of worst-case luck as small as you want.

Worst-case input is different—that's when someone deliberately feeds your algorithm data designed to break it. You can't control what input you get, but you can control your luck. By adding randomness, you're protecting yourself from adversaries who can read your source code and craft inputs to exploit it.

The rock-paper-scissors analogy is perfect here: if you're playing against a telepathic opponent, you'll lose every time if you decide your move in advance. But if you roll a die and play whatever it tells you to, "your opponent's telepathic skills are useless because even you don't know your move in advance."

The Best of Both Worlds

Here's what actually gets me excited: you don't always have to choose. The video mentions introsort, the algorithm used in C++'s standard library sort function. It runs quicksort because it's fast, but it watches for cases where quicksort is taking too long—and if that happens, it switches to heapsort as a fallback.

This is the real-world answer. Use the fast randomized algorithm most of the time, but keep a deterministic safety net for edge cases. You get the speed benefits of randomness while maintaining worst-case guarantees for users who actually care about reliability.

I find this approach fascinating because it acknowledges something fundamental: perfect certainty is expensive, and for most use cases, it's not worth the cost. But for the cases where it matters? Yeah, you can have both.

The intuition here is backwards from how most people think about reliability. Adding dice rolls sounds like you're making your algorithm less trustworthy, but in practice, controlled randomness often makes things more robust. Deterministic algorithms are sitting ducks for adversarial inputs; randomized algorithms are moving targets.

So the next time you're optimizing something—an algorithm, a process, a decision framework—ask yourself: am I paying too much for that last 0.1% of certainty? Because sometimes, being probably right and definitely fast beats being definitely right and probably slow.
