The AI industry's obsession with bigger models may be hitting a wall. According to a leaked internal memo from Meta's Super Intelligence Labs, the company's next-generation model—code-named Avocado—achieves 10 times the compute efficiency of its predecessor on text tasks, and over 100 times the efficiency of an earlier model called Behemoth that apparently never made it to market.

These numbers, if accurate, represent more than incremental progress. They suggest Meta has found a way around the fundamental constraint that's plagued frontier models: the brutal economics of deployment at scale.

The Efficiency Problem Nobody Talks About

The memo reportedly came from Megan Fu, a product manager within Meta's elite AI group, and describes Avocado as the company's "most capable pre-trained base model so far." That phrase carries weight. Base models are raw—they haven't been fine-tuned for specific tasks or aligned with safety guardrails. Most feel like unfinished potential until post-training polish makes them useful. Meta is claiming Avocado already matches models that have gone through extensive optimization, which would be unusual.

The efficiency claims center on compute, not capability. Training massive models has become table stakes for tech giants. The harder problem is serving them to millions or billions of users without bankrupting yourself. A model that delivers equivalent performance at a fraction of the computational cost changes the entire product equation. It means Meta could deploy stronger AI more widely across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp without proportional increases in infrastructure spending.

Meta's Super Intelligence Labs is led by Alexander Wang, founder of Scale AI, a company known for data infrastructure and evaluation pipelines. That appointment signals intent. Wang's background suggests Meta is betting on training discipline, data quality, and models that actually ship—not just research demos that look impressive in papers.

Open Source, Reconsidered

Meta built its AI reputation by releasing the Llama series as open-source models. Thousands of developers adopted them, built on them, and helped validate Meta's infrastructure choices. But the memo reportedly hints at a strategic pivot: Avocado might stay closed.

The logic isn't complicated. Releasing model weights gives competitors free access to years of research investment. It also makes direct monetization nearly impossible. If Avocado truly represents a substantial lead, keeping it proprietary opens doors to enterprise licensing, controlled APIs, and tighter integration with Meta's own products.

The shift reportedly coincides with the departure of Yann LeCun, Meta's longtime AI chief and a vocal advocate for open development. Whether that's correlation or causation remains unclear, but the timing is suggestive.

Meta hasn't confirmed any of this publicly. The company is also developing Mango, described as a next-generation model for high-fidelity image and video generation. Pairing Avocado with Mango would give Meta a complete stack: text and code from one model, visual generation from another. That combination could power everything from content moderation to advertising creative to consumer-facing AI assistants.

When Research Meets Workflow Pain

Meanwhile, Google researchers and collaborators at Peking University introduced PaperBanana, a framework that automates scientific diagram creation. The problem it addresses is unglamorous but real: researchers spend absurd amounts of time wrestling with figure layouts, arrow alignments, and color schemes instead of focusing on actual science.

PaperBanana uses five specialized AI agents working in sequence. A retriever pulls reference examples from published papers. A planner translates dense methodology text into a visual blueprint. A stylist ensures the output matches academic publishing conventions—soft color palettes, clean typography, the visual language expected at conferences like NeurIPS.

The clever part is how it handles different visual types. For conceptual diagrams, it uses image generation models. For statistical plots, it writes executable Python code using matplotlib. The reason: image models can hallucinate numbers or duplicate elements, but code-based plots preserve exact data fidelity. As the researchers note, "Charts need numerical precision and image generation models have a habit of making numbers look right while being wrong."

A critic agent reviews each output, compares it against source text, and provides feedback through three refinement rounds. The benchmark they created—292 test cases from real NeurIPS 2025 papers—showed 17% overall improvement, with a 37.2% gain in conciseness. That last metric matters most. Academic figures often fail not because they're wrong but because they're cluttered.

Design Without Designers

Google is also testing a new Gemini checkpoint that reportedly excels at UI generation and precise SVG output. Early testers in communities like Dev Mode Discord claim it produces complex interfaces and graphics with unusual accuracy.

SVG is unforgiving. Sloppy code produces broken paths, misaligned elements, and unusable assets. A model that handles SVG reliably could accelerate prototyping for product teams, designers, and developers who need quick mockups or design system components.

Google hasn't confirmed the checkpoint publicly, and the company has a history of testing models internally that never reach broader release. What's clearer is strategic direction: Gemini is positioned as Google's unified model for consumer and business applications, with particular emphasis on creative and productivity workflows. SVG generation and UI design fit that positioning perfectly.

Smarter, Not Just Bigger

These three developments share a theme. Meta is chasing efficiency over raw scale. PaperBanana is automating tedious production work that doesn't require genius, just patience. Google is testing whether models can handle precision tasks that currently require human expertise.

The "bigger is better" era produced remarkable capabilities, but it also produced unsustainable costs and diminishing returns. The next phase appears focused on making AI practical—models that companies can actually afford to run, tools that solve real workflow bottlenecks, systems that deliver value without requiring a datacenter.

Whether Avocado's leaked numbers hold up under scrutiny remains to be seen. Meta is reportedly targeting a first-half 2026 launch after completing post-training and safety alignment. Until then, the memo functions more as a statement of intent than proof of achievement. But the direction is unmistakable: the industry is learning that intelligence without efficiency is just an expensive research project.
