AI agents have gotten competent at building functional interfaces. The technical problems—broken layouts, misaligned components, non-responsive elements—have largely been solved. What remains is a different kind of failure: everything looks the same.

This isn't mystifying. Language models trained on similar datasets produce similar outputs. When you ask any AI to design a landing page, you get variations on themes the model has seen thousands of times. Google's Stitch 2.0 attempts to address this through a structured approach to design consistency that trades spontaneity for control.

The Design.md Constraint

Stitch's core mechanism is the design.md file—a structured document that defines colors, typography, spacing, and visual themes. The AI LABS tutorial describes it as "what makes the design transferable from one agent to another," which is accurate but undersells the point. The file doesn't just enable portability; it enforces consistency.

Every Stitch project begins by generating or importing a design system, even when you don't explicitly request one. This addresses what the tutorial identifies as "the biggest problem we had while working with Stitch"—the inability to maintain visual coherence across multiple pages or iterations. Lock in the system early, and subsequent outputs conform to it.

You can create these systems yourself by providing design files or style specifications, or you can generate them through brainstorming sessions with other AI agents. The workflow involves taking a template from Google's official skills repository, having Claude or another agent populate it with your requirements, then importing that into Stitch. The template structure matters because it uses language optimized for how these tools parse design intent—more adjectives for mood, fewer precise measurements.

The question this raises: does constraining the AI early produce better results, or does it just produce more predictable ones?

Imitation Versus Inspiration

Stitch's redesign feature represents a shift in how AI tools handle reference materials. Previously, you'd provide a screenshot and the tool would attempt pixel-perfect replication. Stitch 2.0 treats screenshots differently—as style guides rather than blueprints.

As the tutorial explains: "It pulls the patterns, the component placement, the design language from that reference and applies it to your own website. So, you're basically building something original on top of an existing pattern."

This distinction matters less than it might seem. Whether you're copying a layout exactly or extracting its underlying principles, you're still deriving your design from someone else's work. The moral calculus hasn't changed, only the degree of transformation. What has changed is utility: pattern extraction is more useful than pixel-matching because patterns adapt to different content while pixel-perfect copies don't.

You can also import design systems directly from live websites by providing a URL. Stitch crawls the site and extracts its typography and styling rules. For situations where the AI misinterprets your intent, you can upload wireframes or rough sketches with theme specifications, then use annotation tools to refine specific elements.

The Agent Integration Stack

Google has released several "skills" that connect Stitch to other development agents, particularly Claude Code. The most significant is the Enhanced Prompt Skill, which translates vague instructions into Stitch-optimized language. This matters because Stitch relies on specific adjectives to interpret mood and style—it's not processing natural language the way you'd describe a design to a human.

The Stitch Loop Skill runs an autonomous build cycle, and the React Component Skill converts outputs into modular code structures. Together, these create what the tutorial calls "the closest workflow to building an app in one shot."

The actual process is more elaborate. You create a claude.md file that sequences the workflow: enhance prompts, build design, implement components. When you feed it a landing page request, it follows this pipeline with permission checkpoints between stages. The Enhanced Prompt Skill generates optimized instructions, the Stitch Loop creates the project and design system, then the React Component Skill breaks the output into reusable pieces.

This works, but calling it "one shot" stretches the definition. It's automated, not instantaneous. The value is in removing manual handoffs between tools, not in eliminating the steps themselves.

One technical note: Stitch exports designs as monolithic HTML files by default. Since most modern applications use component-based frameworks like React, this creates extra work mapping HTML to components. The React Component Skill addresses this, but it's solving a problem the tool itself creates.

Component Libraries and the Static Problem

Bare React components generated by Stitch are functional but lifeless—they render the visual design without interaction or animation. Google's shadcn UI skill converts these into interactive components with built-in effects. You can extend this further by integrating component registries like glassmorphism or motion primitives.

The tutorial recommends setting up a claude.md file that automatically applies the shadcn skill whenever you use Stitch MCP, creating a seamless conversion pipeline. For existing Stitch projects, you can retroactively convert them to shadcn-powered applications by specifying the project name and requesting implementation.

This raises a practical question about AI-assisted development: at what point does managing the toolchain become more complex than writing the code yourself? The answer depends on your fluency with both. For developers comfortable in React, these conversion steps might feel like unnecessary abstraction. For designers or non-technical builders, they're essential bridges.

What's Actually Being Solved

Stitch 2.0 addresses a real limitation in AI-generated design work, but it's worth being precise about which limitation. The tool doesn't make AI more creative or original. It makes AI more consistent and controllable. Those aren't the same thing.

The generic sameness in AI designs stems from training data homogeneity. Stitch's solution is to impose your own constraints earlier in the process. This produces differentiation through specification rather than through novel generation. Your designs look different from other AI-generated sites because you've locked in different parameters, not because the AI is thinking differently.

There's value in that approach—consistency matters in production applications, and maintaining it manually across multiple pages is tedious work. Whether that value justifies adding another tool to your workflow depends on what you're building and how you're building it.

The integration with Claude Code and other agents suggests where this category of tooling is headed: not individual design generators but ecosystems of specialized agents that hand off work to each other through structured files. The design.md format is interesting precisely because it's human-readable but agent-optimized. You can understand it, edit it, and pass it between different systems.

That portability might matter more than any individual feature. If design systems become a common interchange format, the specific tools generating them become less important than the systems themselves.
