Google's Gemini CLI Brings AI Agents to Your Terminal
Google quietly launched Gemini CLI, a command-line AI agent that reads files, searches the web, and edits code. Here's what it actually does.

Google just released Gemini CLI, and if you missed it, you're not alone. There was no product launch event, no keynote, no breathless press release about revolutionizing how we work. Just a tutorial video from Google Cloud Tech walking through installation on what they're calling an "open source agent."
The positioning is interesting. Not a chatbot. Not an assistant. An agent. The distinction matters—or at least Google wants you to think it does.
What It Actually Does
Gemini CLI is a terminal-based interface that connects to Google's Gemini models. Jack Wotherspoon, the presenter in Google's tutorial, frames the tool around a specific use case: organizing a tech conference. It's the kind of demo scenario that makes you wonder if anyone at Google has actually organized a tech conference, but it does showcase the tool's core capabilities.
The installation is straightforward if you're already in the Node ecosystem: npm install -google/gemini as a global package. You authenticate via Google login for the free tier, or use an API key or Vertex AI if you're planning to push past those limits.
Once you're in, Gemini CLI can:
- Read local files using the
@symbol for context - Search the web to supplement that context
- Write or modify files (with your approval)
- Switch between Gemini models automatically based on task complexity
That last point is worth examining. The tool defaults to "auto" mode, which routes simple queries to Gemini 3 Flash and complex ones to Gemini 3 Pro. In theory, this optimizes cost and speed. In practice, it means you're never quite sure which model you're talking to—a choice that could matter if you're trying to understand why you got different results from similar prompts.
The Interface Decisions
What struck me about Wotherspoon's walkthrough is how much attention Google paid to the developer experience details. Vim mode support. Customizable themes ("shades of purple" when feeling adventurous, apparently). A /settings command that includes a "hide footer" option to clean up the UI.
These aren't revolutionary features. They're table stakes for any terminal tool hoping to compete with native workflows. But they signal that Google understands its audience here—developers who already have strong preferences about how their tools should behave.
The confirmation prompts for file writes are particularly telling. When Gemini CLI suggests modifying a file, you can:
- Approve once
- Always approve this type of operation
- Open the diff in VS Code
- Reject the change
"Gemini CLI will actually by default have a confirmation so that you the user are in the note and in the flow," Wotherspoon explains. Translation: we're not going to let the AI silently rewrite your codebase. The friction is a feature.
Context as Currency
The demo workflow reveals how Google thinks about AI agents versus chatbots. Instead of asking the model to remember information across a conversation, you explicitly feed it files. Want last year's conference notes? Reference suggestions.md with the @ symbol. Want to compare those notes to current best practices? Prompt it to search the web.
This is a different mental model than ChatGPT or Claude, where context accumulates in a thread. Here, you're curating what the model sees, task by task. The /clear command wipes the slate between jobs, preventing context bleed.
Whether this is better depends entirely on your workflow. If you're the kind of person who thinks in discrete tasks with clear inputs and outputs, this will feel natural. If you prefer exploratory conversations that build on themselves, it might feel restrictive.
The Stats You're Not Shown
There's a /stats command that shows which models handled which requests, what tool calls were made, and what code changes occurred. This transparency is useful—you can see exactly how your usage is distributed across the Gemini model tiers.
What the tutorial doesn't show: error rates, token costs, or how often the model gets context wrong when reading files. These aren't sexy demo features, but they're the difference between a tool that works in controlled examples and one that works in messy reality.
Open Source (Sort Of)
Google labels this an "open source agent," which needs unpacking. The CLI tool itself is open source. The models it connects to are decidedly not. You're still routing everything through Google's infrastructure, authentication, and usage limits.
This matters for anyone thinking about production use. Your workflow now depends on Google's API availability, pricing changes, and model updates. The open source wrapper gives you customization options, but the core functionality remains a Google service.
Compare this to truly local models or fully open-source alternatives, and the trade-offs become clear. You get Google's model quality and infrastructure. You give up control and potentially increase costs as you scale.
Who This Is Actually For
The tech conference scenario is window dressing. The real use case is developers who live in the terminal and want AI assistance without context-switching to a web interface.
If you're already using tools like GitHub Copilot in VS Code, Gemini CLI offers something different: the ability to reason about your project structure, reference multiple files, and execute searches—all without leaving the command line. If you're someone who only reluctantly opens a browser, this might slot into your existing workflow.
But if you're used to AI chat interfaces, this will feel unnecessarily constrained. The command syntax, the explicit context management, the approval flows—they're all optimizations for terminal-native users.
What Google Isn't Saying
The tutorial mentions a free course on DeepLearning.AI, positioning this as an educational tool. That's strategic. By framing Gemini CLI as a learning platform, Google can gather usage data, refine the UX, and build a community before pushing it as a production tool.
The quiet launch also hedges against overpromising. If this takes off, Google can claim they've been listening to developers who wanted command-line access. If it doesn't, it was just an experimental tool for a niche audience.
Wotherspoon closes with a promise: "We're going to go into more detail in the next lesson and cover context and memory within Gemini CLI." That's the part worth watching. How an AI agent handles context over time will determine whether this is a novelty or a genuine productivity tool.
For now, it's an npm install away if you want to try it yourself. Just know what you're getting: a well-designed interface to Google's AI models, not a revolution in how we write code.
