The fact that this works—that an agent deployed through LangSmith can be inspected, validated, and tested using Google's tools—is the whole point. This is what interoperability actually looks like: different companies' tools working together without custom integration work.

The question is whether that tax is worth it. For developers building multi-agent systems where agents need to coordinate across organizational boundaries, probably yes. For someone building a single-purpose agent that never needs to talk to anything else? The overhead might be unnecessary.

What Gets Standardized, What Stays Wild

There's a larger pattern here worth noticing. A2A standardizes the communication layer while leaving the intelligence layer completely open. Your agent can be as simple or sophisticated as you want, use any model, any framework, any reasoning approach—as long as it can speak A2A when it needs to coordinate with other agents.

This is different from, say, the early days of the web, where HTML standardized not just communication but also presentation. A2A is more like TCP/IP: it doesn't care what you're saying, just that everyone agrees on how to package and route messages.

That design choice has consequences. It means A2A won't prevent bad actors from building malicious agents that speak the protocol perfectly. It won't ensure agents make good decisions, only that they can communicate those decisions clearly. The security boundary is at the approval checkpoints, not in the protocol itself.

The Deployment Gap

One detail that might escape notice: Harry's demo assumes you're comfortable with command-line deployment, environment variables, API key management. The actual interaction with A2A—once everything's set up—is straightforward. But getting there requires navigating the usual deployment complexity.

This matters because it reveals who A2A is currently for: developers building production systems, not end users deploying their first agent. There's nothing wrong with that—every technology starts somewhere—but it does mean the "agents talking to agents" future is still being built by the same people who build all our infrastructure.

The interesting question is whether A2A will enable a future where non-technical users can deploy agents that automatically interoperate, or whether the protocol will remain infrastructure that gets abstracted away by higher-level tools. Probably both, in different contexts.

What Comes After Talking

Here's what A2A doesn't solve: agents still need to know what to say to each other. The protocol handles the how, not the why. An agent can perfectly communicate a terrible idea to another agent, and A2A will dutifully deliver that message in the correct format.

This is where the human-in-the-loop functionality becomes more than a safety feature—it's an acknowledgment that agent-to-agent communication creates new risks precisely because it's so efficient. When agents can coordinate at machine speed, the blast radius of a bad decision or a compromised agent expands accordingly.

The A2A protocol represents a bet that standardizing agent communication is valuable enough to warrant the coordination costs. LangSmith's integration suggests that bet is starting to pay off, at least in the developer tools ecosystem. Whether it pays off in production systems where actual consequences attach to agent decisions—that's the test we're about to run.
