Claude Code Skills: The Feature Most People Misunderstand
Skills in Claude Code aren't just plug-and-play tools. Understanding how they actually work—and how to build your own—changes everything about AI development.

Here's what most people get wrong about Claude Code: they treat skills like app store downloads. Find one that sounds useful, install it, forget about it. But Chase, an AI developer who just dropped a tutorial on mastering Claude Code skills, argues that approach misses the entire point.
"Claude Code without skills is like a smartphone without apps," he explains. "But if you want to master skills inside of Claude Code, we have to do better than just downloading a bunch of random ones from some repo we found on GitHub somewhere."
The analogy works, but it also reveals something interesting about how we think about AI tools. We're so conditioned by the app economy that we apply the same mental model everywhere—even when it doesn't quite fit.
What Skills Actually Are (And Why That Matters)
Turns out, skills aren't apps at all. They're text prompts. That's it. Each skill is essentially a set of instructions telling Claude Code how to approach a specific task in a specific way. The front-end design skill? It's a prompt that guides Claude toward better visual choices. The GitHub integration? Another prompt explaining how to interact with repositories.
This simplicity is either liberating or concerning, depending on your perspective. On one hand, "if you can prompt it inside of Claude Code, you can turn it into a skill," Chase notes. That's genuinely flexible—you can create skills for basically anything you can describe. On the other hand, you're trusting that the person who wrote that skill prompt actually knew what they were doing.
The mechanics are straightforward: Claude Code keeps a list of available skills with brief descriptions, but doesn't load them all into its context window at once. When you mention something that might need a skill—say, designing a website—it scans the list, picks what seems relevant, and loads that full skill into its working memory. It's efficient, but it surfaces two immediate problems.
First: skill selection accuracy. If you've installed 50 different skills, Claude Code has to pick the right one from that menu every time. Add a few skills with overlapping descriptions, and you're creating ambiguity. Second: skill activation. Claude has to recognize that a skill is needed in the first place. A vague prompt like "let's build a website" might not always trigger the front-end design skill.
Chase's solution to both issues? Keep your skill arsenal minimal ("we want a scalpel") and optimize descriptions. Also, don't rely on Claude to infer—tell it explicitly which skill to use, or force invocation with the forward-slash command.
The Scope Problem Nobody Talks About
When Chase walks through adding new skills, he surfaces a design decision that probably deserves more attention: user scope versus project scope. Install a skill for your user account, and it's available across all your projects. Install it for a specific repository, and it only exists there.
This isn't just about organization—it's about cognitive load. Every skill you add to your global list is another option Claude Code has to evaluate every time you prompt it. Project-specific skills keep that evaluation space smaller and more relevant. But here's the tension: how do you know, when you're installing a skill, whether you'll need it elsewhere? You're making architectural decisions about your future workflow based on incomplete information.
The practical advice—really think about whether you need this everywhere or just here—is solid but incomplete. What we're actually seeing is that skills introduce a new kind of technical debt. Not the code kind, but the cognitive kind. Every skill is a potential source of confusion later.
Skill Creator: Meta-Skills Get Weird
The most interesting part of Chase's tutorial is Skill Creator, an official Anthropic tool that creates, modifies, and optimizes other skills. It's meta-AI—AI that improves AI.
Chase demonstrates by asking it to build a custom workflow: generate YouTube title ideas based on content descriptions, then cross-reference them with his actual top-performing videos using another custom skill. Skill Creator spins up three sub-agents to explore the problem, asks clarifying questions, drafts the new skill, and then—this is the wild part—runs its own A/B tests. Three test cases with the new skill, three without, to see if the skill actually adds value.
The result includes benchmark data: assertion pass rates, token usage, time comparisons. It even explains what the skill does better than the baseline and what the baseline handles fine on its own, in case you need to simplify later.
When Chase tests the finished skill, it analyzes his video performance over three months, identifies winning patterns versus flops, checks the competitive landscape for similar titles, and outputs options in three tiers: safe bets, calculated risks, and "swinging for the fences."
It's legitimately useful. It's also legitimately strange. We're now at the point where AI can benchmark its own performance improvements and suggest optimizations. The loop is closing.
The Unasked Questions
What Chase's tutorial does well is explain the mechanics. What it doesn't explore—and maybe can't, in a ten-minute format—is what happens as skill ecosystems mature.
If skills are just text prompts, how do we ensure quality control? GitHub repos can contain anything. The marketplace Chase references has curation, but as these tools proliferate, who's vetting what? We've seen what happens with browser extensions and npm packages—supply chain attacks, abandoned projects, version conflicts.
Also: at what point does skill management become its own job? Chase's advice to keep skills minimal is right, but it's fighting against the natural incentive structure. More skills mean more capabilities, and capabilities are how we justify these tools professionally. The pressure will be toward accumulation, not curation.
And finally: what's the actual difference between a well-crafted skill and just... learning to prompt better? If skills are text prompts, and you can always tell Claude Code explicitly what to do, when is the skill abstraction actually necessary versus when is it just organizing complexity you could handle directly?
These aren't criticisms of Chase's tutorial—they're questions the tutorial makes visible. Skills are powerful, clearly. Whether they're a fundamental feature or a transitional solution to problems we'll eventually handle differently is still genuinely open.
