ChatGPT vs Claude: The Visual Explainer Battle Nobody Saw Coming

OpenAI and Anthropic released competing visual tools within 48 hours. We tested both—one's faster, one's smarter, and the differences matter.

OpenAI released interactive visual explainers on March 10th. Anthropic released theirs on March 12th. This happens a lot—competing features dropping within days of each other—and I've stopped believing in coincidences.

Matt Wolfe and Joe Fier from The Next Wave podcast spent nearly two hours testing both systems, and what they discovered reveals something more interesting than which tool is "better." One company built a showcase. The other built a tool. The difference matters.

The Speed Trap

ChatGPT's visual explainers load instantly. Ask it about compound interest, the Pythagorean theorem, or the ideal gas law, and you get sliders, animations, and real-time updates in under a second. It feels like magic—which should make you suspicious.

The hosts discovered why: "ChatGPT has a library of pre-built interactive learning visuals, about 70 of them," Wolfe explained after asking the system directly. "Each one corresponds to a specific formula or concept: compound interest, Ohm's law, Pythagorean theorem, exponential decay."

Seventy pre-built demos. That's it. If your question matches one of those templates, you get the impressive instant response. If it doesn't, ChatGPT falls back to writing custom code—which defeats the entire purpose of the feature.

Claude's approach takes longer. Sometimes noticeably longer. When Fier asked it to build an interactive Padres schedule for the 2026 season, they watched it think. No instant gratification. But what emerged was actually built for that specific request—complete with color-coded home and away games, Dodger series highlighted unprompted, and accurate data pulled from real schedules.

The Difference Between Demo and Tool

I've covered enough product launches to recognize when a company is showing off versus solving problems. ChatGPT's visual explainers are impressive demos—polished, fast, perfect for screenshots and launch videos. They work beautifully for the 70 scenarios OpenAI anticipated.

Claude's implementation is messier. The hosts found cases where visualizations failed partway through generation. Formatting sometimes broke. But when it worked, it actually built what they asked for, not what someone at Anthropic predicted they might ask for six months ago.

"I feel like they kind of announced it as if it was generating this stuff on the fly," Wolfe said about ChatGPT's feature. "But that's not what it's doing. It's just got a bunch of these pre-built into it."

The compound interest visualizer illustrates this clearly. Both systems can create one, but ChatGPT's version is identical every time—same layout, same color scheme, same sliders. Claude generated different versions based on how the request was phrased. When Wolfe asked it to change colors to purple and pink, it did. The ChatGPT version can't be modified because it's not being generated—it's being retrieved.

What This Reveals About AI Development

The race to ship features has created an interesting pattern. Companies can either build comprehensive systems that handle edge cases gracefully, or they can build impressive demos that work perfectly for common scenarios. The first approach takes longer. The second ships faster and photographs better.

OpenAI chose speed and polish. Seventy pre-built visualizations cover a lot of educational use cases—enough that most users will encounter something that works. The limitation only becomes apparent when you try to do something slightly different.

Anthropic chose flexibility and risk. Their system attempts to generate visualizations on demand, which means it sometimes fails but also means it can theoretically handle anything you throw at it. When the hosts asked Claude to visualize a baseball schedule, it worked. ChatGPT would have shrugged.

"Claude seems to build it for you when you prompt it," Fier observed, watching the system construct a calendar in real-time. That's a fundamentally different architecture—and a different philosophy about what AI tools should do.

The Prompting Problem

Both systems suffer from the same issue: users don't know what to ask for. ChatGPT's 70 pre-built visualizations would be more useful if there was a menu showing what's available. Instead, users have to guess which prompts trigger the feature.

Claude's on-demand generation is more flexible, but the hosts spent considerable time figuring out the right phrasing. "Create an interactive explanation" works better than "show me" or "visualize this." These aren't intuitive distinctions.

The ideal gas law visualization in ChatGPT includes animated molecules bouncing around a container—genuinely helpful for understanding the concept. But unless you know to ask specifically about the ideal gas law using terminology that matches OpenAI's internal labels, you won't see it.

Claude generated a similar visualization when prompted, but it took longer and the interface was less polished. The tradeoff: you can actually request variations and modifications.

What Works Better for Whom

If you're teaching chemistry, physics, or mathematics at a standard curriculum level, ChatGPT's pre-built visualizations are excellent. They're polished, fast, and cover common concepts. The Pythagorean theorem explainer with draggable sliders that update the triangle in real-time is legitimately useful.

If you're trying to visualize something specific—a schedule, a timeline, a custom dataset—Claude's generation approach makes more sense. The hosts successfully created an interactive 162-game baseball calendar with team colors and highlighted rivalry games. ChatGPT couldn't do that because nobody at OpenAI predicted someone would ask for it.

The pattern extends beyond these tools. This same dynamic plays out across AI development: do you build a showcase with limited but polished capabilities, or do you build a flexible tool that sometimes breaks? The answer depends on whether you're trying to impress users or serve them.

Both companies will iterate. ChatGPT will eventually add more pre-built templates. Claude will improve its generation reliability. But the architectural choices they've made reveal different answers to the question of what AI assistants should be: demonstration of capabilities, or tools that adapt to actual needs.

I've watched this movie before, and history suggests the flexible approach wins long-term, even when the polished demos get more headlines initially. Users forgive roughness when something actually solves their problem. They don't forgive limitations—even polished ones—when they're trying to accomplish something specific.
